Directions for Laminating Rabbit Cage Cards & Rabbit Litter Cards

Picture
Both the Rabbit Cage Cards and the Rabbit Litter Cards work best laminated although you could treat them as disposable and not laminate them. You can purchase an inexpensive laminator for around $20 on Amazon. Print your cards and then cut them apart, trimming close to the outside edge of the boxes then lay your cards out in your laminator sheets and laminate according to your laminator’s directions. Once you laminate, trim again- be sure to leave a small space all the way around your card so that the laminating sheet stays sealed. Hole punch your card in the center of the top box- it’s there just for this purpose. You can use a variety of things to hang your tags- I like to use carabiners but shower curtain rings work well also and can often be purchased at dollar stores. I purchase my mini carabiners on Amazon (AGPtek 2” carabiners run about $8 for 36 or $14 for 120). If you choose not to laminate your cards, be warned that your bucks may spray on them and they are easier for your rabbits to chew on. I also recommend card stock rather than paper, although paper does work. I like to hang mine on my J-feeders (the photo is an older style of cards but you get the idea).

Individual ID Cage Cards

This file is a docx file. Open your file, type in the details for each rabbit and save your document as a new file name so that you can reuse this blank template in the future. There are enough cards here for 12 rabbits. Please feel free to copy and paste blank cards at the end if you need more, or delete unneeded cards. Keep in mind it’s nice to have a few blank cards on hand so you can hand write the details for a new rabbit until you have a chance to make a permanent card. The section at the top of the card is for your rabbit’s name. The type font is large enough to see from a short distance, making it easy to identify your rabbits. The side section is for your rabbit’s official pedigreed name- you can change the font size to make it fit into the box. The next section includes identifying markers such as color/pattern, tattoo, as well as a brief reminder of bloodlines. DOB is Date of Birth and DTB is Date to Breed- or the date when your rabbit is a senior and old enough to breed. Once you have all the information typed in, follow the directions above to print and laminate your cards.

There are enough cards here for 4 litters. For more, print multiple copies. Keep in mind it’s nice to have a few extra blank cards on hand. Follow the directions above for laminating your cards. Once you have them laminated, use a sharpie to write on your cards. You can use a dry erase marker instead of a sharpie but then your ink wipes off easily. The sharpie is semi-permanent, and it WILL come off with rubbing alcohol or nail polish remover (this is a good way to sanitize your cards as well). If you need to change a detail or remove your notes, simply use rubbing alcohol or nail polish remover to “erase” your writing, let it dry for a moment, and then rewrite. Write in your doe’s information, the buck she was bred to, what day she was bred, her estimated due date and what day to put a nest box in (I like to put one in four days prior to her due date so she is less likely to use it as a litter box), the day she actually kindles, and the number of kits in the litter.

Rabbit Information Form

This file is a docx file. Type in the details for each rabbit and save your document as a new file name so that you can reuse this blank template in the future. There are enough documents here for 12 rabbits. Please feel free to copy and paste pages at the end if you need more, or delete unneeded pages. The section at the top of the page is for your rabbit’s name and breed. The next section includes identifying markers such as sex, color and pattern (variety), tattoo, as well as a brief reminder of his or her bloodlines. DOB is date of birth, and DTB is date to breed (when your rabbit is a senior and old enough to breed). Related to: is for tracking which of your rabbits (or maybe even friends’ rabbits) that your rabbit is related to, including parents, siblings, progeny (sons and daughters), and even other rabbits who may not be as closely related. While you already have the parents listed above, it can be handy to have all the information handy in one place. Colors in Background by Generation: is a great place to track information without having to hunt through a pedigree. If your rabbit carries only a standard color in its background (such as with a New Zealand White), you could delete this section. The next few sections should be pretty self explanatory- original breeder's information and who you purchased the rabbit from if you didn't breed it yourself. You can add notes about your rabbit's breeding history prior to purchasing it as well, and finally any useful notes.

Gestation Chart

You can print the Gestation Chart and laminate it if you want. I have one hung in my rabbitry, one hole punched in my binder, and one in my clipboard (which has a compartment for storing documents). To use the gestation chart, put your finger on the date you bred your doe and slide it to the right. That’s her due date. If you hit one of the arrows in a blank space, continue on to the next space.

Both of these forms function similarly- you can print blank ones and put them in a binder or on a clipboard and write on them, or you can laminate them and then write on them in sharpie (you can use a dry erase marker instead of a sharpie but then your ink wipes off easily). Write in your doe’s name, the buck she was bred to, what day she was bred, what date you need to palpate, what date a nest box needs to go in, her estimated due date and what day the kits are born, plus how many kits are born. The primary difference between these two forms is that the Breeding & Litter Log gives you a space for when you wean (or plan to wean) and how many kits you weaned.

Rabbit Tracker

This is an entire rabbit tracking system designed in Excel. Each tab is for a separate function. The last two tabs are for your bucks and does- type in their information. The first tab is the directions, the second and third tab are for planned breedings and actual breedings- DO NOT touch the already-entered dates even though they look strange. They are calculations and take the date you enter and auto-complete future dates for you. As you type in the breeding date, the form will auto-complete the due date for example. The center tab- litters- is for tracking litters.

Litter Assessment Form

Picture
If you have the capability, print this form double-sided. If not, then just keep the two pages together. Fill in the information in the following sections:
  1. Dam of litter and sire of litter
  2. DOB- Date of Birth/DOW- Date of weaning
  3. # Born- How many kits born/# Wean- How many kits weaned
  4. Tattoo sequence for this litter, if you have one
  5. Date of assessment
  6. Breed of litter
  7. Litter age by weeks- if more than 12 weeks, then write the age
  8. Notes that affect the entire litter (things such as fostered to another doe, or fosters added to this litter, maybe this was the doe's first litter, if they all had a common flaw or impressive quality, etc
  9. Sex to the left and then variety- you can check the box for broken, solid, and/or standard- write the color in the box
  10. Status of this kit- will you keep it, sell it, cull it, wait and grow out a little longer, or do an individual assessment because you like the rabbit
  11. Weight the date of the assessment
  12. Quick checklist of common flaws
  13. Notes for negative or positive points- no need to get too detailed, since that is what the individual assessment is for
  14. Finally the kit's order in your litter- 1 would be your favorite kit, and so on (if you number odds for bucks and evens for does then you can number your favorite buck 1 and your favorite doe 2)

Individual Assessment Form

Picture
  1. Tattoo and Rabbit's name (barn name is fine)
  2. Date of assessment
  3. Variety and sex
  4. Weight date of assessment and breed of rabbit
  5. Age of rabbit in months (or write in years)
  6. If you take photos of your rabbits for your records, here's a way to record that you took these photos on this date
  7. Overall condition of the rabbit- the items in BOLD are the ones you are hopefully able to check off. Rating is overall rating from 1-5, I like to save that for last. Status is what you decide to do with this rabbit after completing this assessment.
  8. Body condition and fur condition- Hopefully you are able to check the bolded items but there are other options. This form is best used if you have an understanding of rabbit type and conformation but it can still be useful if you are new.
